The Birth of K & Updates

Indie Coffee Roasters

Before I talk about the pictures below I wanted to take a second to mention a neat new local coffee shop here in Carmel. Indie Coffee Roasters opened this past week and I had the opportunity to stop by and try their selection! ICR imports and roasts their own selection, offering a relaxing seating area where you can enjoy their roasts in whatever brewing method you prefer. Definitely worth a look!

K's First Week

What a week it has been. I've been fortunate enough to take the week off to help my wife and G adjust to life with our second newborn. I've been squeezing editing in to the few free moments we have after G is asleep and my wife is busy with K. I've been very happy with the photographs, and I'll be the first to admit that several made me tear just through the editing process. Moments like these are once in a lifetime and I consider myself very fortunate to be able to capture them in the way that I did.

Updates

January kept me engaged some corporate headshot work, as the Indiana weather certainly doesn't give much opportunity to work outdoors. Several great sessions are coming up in the next few weeks! I have an exciting opportunity to work with a client at the Focus On Studio in Carmel which is a terrific studio where you can rent the space by the hour. One of my goals this year is to learn more about studio photography and increase my skills in this area, and this certainly gives me the opportunity to do that.

Introducing the Newest Team Member

My wife and I are thrilled to welcome our second daughter into the world. Both mommy and baby are doing great. IU Health in Carmel, Indiana has been tremendous in delivering both of our daughters. While we have some downtime here in the hospital I wanted to show off a couple of photos from the big day and talk through how I took them!

Lens Choice

For photographing the birth I wanted something that would work well indoors with no flash and I wanted the creamy 'bokeh' effect to blur any distracting backgrounds. To get that blurred bokeh effect you need a lens with a low f stop number. This reduces your depth of field, the ISO required in low light conditions, and increases the blurry bokeh effect. I rented a Nikkor 85mm f1.4 for the occasion and have been extremely pleased with it's performance. The only issue I've had with the lens was the minimum focus distance being 3', and the distance required to frame a person requiring to usually be about 4-5' away from the subject. In hindsight I might have been better with the 58mm f1.4 lens, but that would have reduced lens compression. All in all you can't always get exactly what you want out of a lens, but the pictures have turned out phenomenal and I couldn't be happier.

I wanted to get a few pictures up while we were in the hospital, and there's still plenty more to come!

Happy Holidays - December Update

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! This holiday season has already been a whirlwind for my family and I hope you're finding time to relax and spend it with yours. This December has given me the time to focus on planning for next year and am excited to see where business will head. Sessions are starting to fill in and I'm eager for the weather to turn nice again! After four months of formally launching Tim Schumm Photography I have been able to jump into several opportunities and have been able to push my own photographic abilities to a place I certainly didn't expect I would be a year ago. It's been a pleasure meeting a lot of new faces along the way and am grateful for everything I've learned over the last few months.

With the weather turning cold outside the photography has slowed down a bit but I've still had several opportunities to find some fascinating scenery. My family recently visited the Indianapolis Zoo to see their Christmas light display and wasn't disappointed. The zoo surrounds their visitors with thousands of lights of every color which presents some amazing opportunities for photography!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Tim Schumm Photography!
